Chosen

We spend our lives looking and longing to be chosen. It shapes us. So much of our identity is wrapped up in being chosen or not chosen. So it’s no accident that Paul mentions first: you are chosen by God. God looks at you and says, “I choose you.”

Teaching Notes

WHAT’S TRUE OF YOU THAT YOU NEVER KNEW:

FOR not FROM as a result FROM not FOR

  • God wants something FOR you more than He wants something FROM
  • As a result you live FROM a place of blessing not FOR a blessing.

You have been CHOSEN by God

For he chose us in him before the creation of the world to be holy and blameless in his sight.  Ephesians 1:4

Question # 1:  Do I have a choice in it all?

3 MAJOR VIEWS ON GOD’S SOVEREIGNTY & HUMAN FREE WILL:

  1. Like SHAKESPEARE is to HAMLET.
  1. Like the PRESIDENT is to the UNITED STATES.
  1. Like a CAPTAIN is to an OCEAN LINER.

Question #2: Did I choose God or did God choose me?

2 VIEWS ON ELECTION:

  1. INDIVIDUAL Election
  1. CORPORATE Election

In him we were also chosen, having been predestined according to the plan of him who works out everything in conformity with the purpose of his will, in order that we, who were the first to put our hope in Christ, might be for the praise of his glory.

And you also were included in Christ when you heard the message of truth, the gospel of your salvation. When you believed, you were marked in him with a seal, the promised Holy Spirit…  Ephesians 1:11-13

“In Christ, then, we have been admitted to the ranks of the chosen people, the holy heritage of God.”  Theologian, F.F. Bruce

God CHOSE you and you have the choice to CHOOSE Him too.

Behold, I stand at the door and knock. If anyone hears my voice and opens the door, I will come in to him and eat with him, and he with me.  Revelation 3:20

PRAYER:

I keep asking that the God of our Lord Jesus Christ, the glorious Father, may give you the Spirit of wisdom and revelation, so that you may know him better.  I pray that the eyes of your heart may be enlightened in order that you may know the hope to which he has called you, the riches of his glorious inheritance in his holy people, and his incomparably great power for us who believe.  Ephesians 1:17-19

More from Unnoticed Grace

So often, we take the most fundamental things for granted—everything from a beating heart to a place to belong. Perhaps the greatest thing we take for granted is grace. There is this intangible thread that carries us through this life - often unnoticed, often forgotten - that is woven together by the God who created us. It is the unmerited favor that marks us as believers in Jesus. Taking time to notice these fundamental aspects of our Christ-centered identity can change everything about how we live and who we are. Join us as we turn our attention to how unnoticed grace is nearer and far greater than we realize.
