Afterglow

Worship is the natural activity of the soul.  We can’t help but adore, praise, and idolize that which captures our hearts.  You were created to worship God. Our true home, our greatest desires, what our hearts are made for is to bring glory to God.  How do we return to that which we were created for? How do we worship God?  Join us for part 2 of our installment of Not Your Ordinary Church Service: Afterglow.

Scripture

  • Exodus 33:7-23
  • John 1:14-18

Teaching Notes

How do we move from a church with worship music to a church filled with passionate worshippers?

Perspective: The tent of MEETING.

And let them make me a sanctuary, that I may dwell in their midst. Exodus 25:8

Now Moses used to take a tent and pitch it outside the camp some distance away, calling it the “tent of meeting.” Anyone inquiring of the LORD would go to the tent of meeting outside the camp. Exodus 33:7

What is Worship?

Worship is RECOGNIZING & RESPONDING to the greatness of God.

Therefore, I urge you, brothers and sisters, in view of God’s mercy, to offer your   bodies as a living sacrifice, holy and pleasing to God—this is your true and proper worship.  Romans 12:1

“Worship is a whole-life response to the greatness and glory of God.” Louie Giglio

Why Musical Worship?

Music is the LANGUAGE of the soul.

Music changes the ATMOSPHERE.

Pursuit: Show me Your GLORY.

Then Moses said, “Now show me your glory.”

And the Lord said, “I will cause all my goodness to pass in front of you, and I will proclaim my name, the Lord, in your presence. I will have mercy on whom I will have mercy, and I will have compassion on whom I will have compassion.  But,” he said, “you cannot see my face, for no one may see me and live.” Exodus 33:18-20

“Left to ourselves we tend immediately to reduce God to manageable terms. We want to get Him where we can use Him, or at least know where He is when we need Him. We want a God we can in some measure control.” W. Tozer

Postures of Worship:

Moses bowed to the ground at once and worshiped. Exodus 34:8

BOW / KNEEL in Reverence

STAND in Honor / Awe

DANCE in Joy / Delight

RAISE HANDS in Surrender

Presence: Face was RADIANT.

When Moses came down from Mount Sinai with the two tablets of the covenant law in his hands, he was not aware that his face was radiant because he had spoken with the Lord. Exodus 34:29

Now the Lord is the Spirit, and where the Spirit of the Lord is, there is freedom. And we all, who with unveiled faces contemplate the Lord’s glory, are being transformed into his image with ever-increasing glory, which comes from the Lord, who is the Spirit. 2 Corinthians 3:17-18
