Teaching Notes

Behold: to gaze, to wonder, to look at “someone or something until something has been grasped of the significance of that person or thing.”

How do you move beyond the hurry of the season & truly behold the One it’s all about?

How do you worship the King?

Who you APPROACH determines the POSTURE that you take.

“Our whole selves—body, soul, and spirit—must worship God, for we cannot truly love God with only part of our being.”

- St. Augustine

“The soul is not imprisoned in the body but uses it as an instrument for its own expression.”

- Thomas Aquinas

“The Christian body is a temple of the Holy Spirit, and what we do physically matters spiritually.”

- N.T. Wright

THE POSTURE MATTERS

For to us a child is born, to us a son is given, and the government will be on his shoulders.  And he will be called Wonderful Counselor, Mighty God, Everlasting Father, Prince of Peace.

Isaiah 9:6

Postures of Worship:

  • Wonderful Counselor: the physical posture of OPEN HANDS.
  • Mighty God: the physical posture of BOWING DOWN.
  • Everlasting Father: the physical posture of RAISED HANDS.
  • Prince of Peace: the physical posture of STANDING or DANCING.

Responses to Jesus:

  • Elizabeth – Exclaimed in a Loud Voice (Luke 1:41-42)

SHOUT for Joy.

  • Mary – Mary’s Song & Treasured in Her Heart (Luke 1:46-56; 2:19)

SING with Passion.

“Singing with passion and shouting for joy are not just acts of praise; they are acts of warfare against despair.”

– Martin Luther

  • The Shepherds – Spread the Word & Praising God (Luke 2:17; 19-20)

SHARE with Others.

  • The Magi – Bowed Down & Brought Gifts (Matthew 2:11)

GIVE with Generosity

What does your posture reveal about how you see God?

If you truly saw Jesus as the King of kings, how would it change the way you approach Him in worship?
