What do you hope for?
How does what you hope for help you get through what you’re facing?
Gospel: the good news about God reconciling himself to us through the life death and resurrection of Jesus.
CHRISTUS VICTOR = Christ the Victor!
The gospel is good news about Jesus’ victory over Satan, sin, and death.
The reason the Son of God appeared was to destroy the devil’s work.
1 John 3:8b
SATAN
Satan is a real spiritual being who has real power in this world.
8 Be alert and of sober mind. Your enemy the devil prowls around like a roaring lion looking for someone to devour.
1 Peter 5:8
19 We know that we are children of God, and that the whole world is under the control of the evil one.
1 John 5:19
- We are all DECEIVED by Satan.
44 You belong to your father, the devil, and you want to carry out your father’s desires. He was a murderer from the beginning, not holding to the truth, for there is no truth in him. When he lies, he speaks his native language, for he is a liar and the father of lies.
John 8:44
SIN
חָטָא (khata): to fail or miss a mark.
- Sin is failing to love God and others.
21 “You have heard that it was said to the people long ago, ‘You shall not murder, and anyone who murders will be subject to judgment.’ 22 But I tell you that anyone who is angry with a brother or sister, will be subject to judgment.
Matthew 5:21-22
27 “You have heard that it was said, ‘You shall not commit adultery.’ j 28 But I tell you that anyone who looks at a woman lustfully has already committed adultery with her in his heart.
Matthew 5:27-28
- We are all ENSLAVED by sin.
34 Jesus replied, “Very truly I tell you, everyone who sins is a slave to sin.”
John 8:34
3All have turned away, all have become corrupt; there is no one who does good, not even one.
Psalms 14:3
DEATH
- Death is not just the end of biological life, but a separation from God caused by sin.
- We are all under the POWER of death.
12 Therefore, just as sin entered the world through one man, and death through sin, and in this way death came to all people, because all sinned
Romans 5:12
CHRIST’S VICTORY
Jesus had victory over Satan, sin, and death through his life, death, and resurrection.
And having disarmed the powers and authorities, he made a public spectacle of them, triumphing over them by the cross.
Colossians 2:15
14 Since the children have flesh and blood (us), he too shared in their humanity so that by his death he might break the power of him who holds the power of death—that is, the devil —15 and free those who all their lives were held in slavery by their fear of death.
Hebrews 2:14-15
- How does Jesus’ victory affect us today?
- Hope to OVERCOME temptation and lies.
7 Submit yourselves, then, to God. Resist the devil, and he will flee from you.
James 4:7
4 You, dear children, are from God and have overcome them, because the one who is in you is greater than the one who is in the world.
1 John 4:4
- Hope for HEALING.
24 “He himself bore our sins” in his body on the cross, so that we might die to sins and live for righteousness; “by his wounds you have been healed.”
1 Peter 2:24
- Hope for a FUTURE.
4 We were therefore buried with him through baptism into death in order that, just as Christ was raised from the dead through the glory of the Father, we too may live a new life. 5 For if we have been united with him in a death like his, we will certainly also be united with him in a resurrection like his.
Romans 6:4-5
Death has been swallowed up in victory.” 55 “Where, O death, is your victory? Where, O death, is your sting?” l 56 The sting of death is sin, and the power of sin is the law. 57 But thanks be to God! He gives us the victory through our Lord Jesus Christ.
