Near the beginning of the Sermon on the Mount, Jesus makes the startling claim that his follower are the salt of the earth and the light of the world. He doesn’t say we should “try” to be salt or light—he simply says this is what we are. As followers of Jesus, it seems as though this is something we already are in Christ. What does it mean to be salt and light in today’s conflicted, divided world? How can this metaphor shape us as a church?
