The Antidote For Hurry

More from Presence

Teaching Notes

Why do we hurry?

Why do we rush from one thing to the next?

THE AGE OF ACCELERATION: Bigger, Faster, Better?

Electricity – Traded the rhythm of CREATION for the rhythm of PRODUCTION.

Travel – The WORLD got smaller, HURRY got bigger.

Computer – Promised FREEDOM; delivered PRESSURE

Phone – Promised CONNECTION; delivered DISTRACTION.

Life has SPED up, and our SOULS can’t keep up.

THE ANTIDOTE FOR HURRY

Be still and know that I am God.”

Psalm 46:10

Be Still – Raphe, to put an end to a state or activity; to sink down or relax into, to drop or let go, release.

Know – Yada; deep, intimate, and personal understanding, not just factual knowledge; knowledge by way of experience.

I am God – Elohim, the supernatural Being who originated and rules over the universe, God’s creative activity. Yahweh, God’s personal, faithful, active presence.

We must learn to be PRESENT to The Presence in the PRESENT.

“The most holy and necessary practice in our spiritual life is the presence of God. That means finding constant pleasure in His divine company, speaking humbly and lovingly with him in all seasons, at every moment, without limiting the conversation in any way.”

- Brother Lawrence

THE STRUGGLE WITH STILLNESS:

“Hurry is the great enemy of spiritual life in our day. You must ruthlessly eliminate hurry from your life.”

- Dallas Willard

  • Being still is BORING.
  • Being still is HARD.
  • Being still takes PRACTICE.
  • Being still is a SOUL REVEAL.

3 STEPS TO STILLNESS

  • PHYSICAL stillness

Find a quiet space. No tech distractions. Can be on the couch, in the car/bedroom.

  • MENTAL stillness

Write down the “to-do” lists that keep popping up. Push through distracting thoughts.

  • EMOTIONAL stillness

Hand over to God your fears, hurts, unforgiveness, self-righteousness, things that have made you angry at God, anything you’re holding onto.

DAILY PRACTICE:

  • Stop the SCROLL. (Do Not Disturb)
  • Find a space of PEACE. (Candle)
  • Set a TIMER. (10 min.)

Turn your ATTENTION to GOD. (Scripture + Listening)
