Teaching Notes

How do you experience growth that truly lasts?

Good Seed + Good Soil = EXPONENTIAL HARVEST

Good soil doesn’t happen by ACCIDENT—it’s CULTIVATED.

ROCKY SOIL | A SHALLOW HEART

The seed falling on rocky ground refers to someone who hears the word and at once receives it with joy. But since they have no root, they last only a short time. When trouble or persecution comes because of the word, they quickly fall away.

Matthew 13:20-21

What is a shallow heart?

A shallow heart begins with a passion for Jesus but avoids the deeper work of spiritual formation: clearing barriers, growing roots, and building resilience. It thrives on enthusiasm but falters under testing, abandoning the faith it once embraced so eagerly.

What are the symptoms of a shallow heart?

Personal Assessment:

  • Jesus is my Life COACH, not KING:
I love the idea of Jesus as my Savior and Friend, but I resist surrendering every aspect of my life to His Lordship. I tend to follow Jesus’ advice when it aligns with my preferences, but when it requires sacrifice or change, I hold back.
  • When feelings FADE, so does my FAITH:
My faith thrives in emotional highs—an amazing worship set or a moving message—but struggles when life gets hard, routine, or mundane. When I don’t feel God’s presence, I begin to doubt or drift.
  • Jesus EXISTS to make me HAPPY:
I follow Jesus for what He can do for me, expecting Him to make my life easy and comfortable. When my life includes struggles or difficulties, I feel let down by God.
  • Susceptibility to CULTURAL TRENDS:
I often adopt cultural philosophies or values without asking, “Does this align with God’s Word?” I don’t want to stand out, so I let cultural values dictate my choices rather than God’s Word.
  • Outsourced SPIRITUAL NOURISHMENT:
I rely heavily on spiritual leaders or podcasts but lack the personal initiative to seek God and understand His Word for myself.

What causes rocky soil?

  • CONSUMER Christianity
  • PROSPERITY Gospel
  • SELECTIVE Obedience
  • INCONSISTENT Spiritual Practices

How do you cultivate the soil to deepen your roots?

1. Embrace an ETERNAL PERSPECTIVE. (1 Peter)

  • Life is HARD. (John 16:33; Romans 5:1-5; James 1:2-4)
  • God is GOOD. (John 3:16; James 1:16-17)
  • Eternity is LONG. (2 Corinthians 4:16-18; 1 Peter 5:10)

2. Get into the WORD of GOD daily. (Psalm 1; Romans 12:2)

  • CONSISTENCY over INTENSITY

3. Make Jesus LORD of your LIFE. (Matthew 6:33; Mark 8:34-35; Luke 6:46-49)
