Teaching Notes

A strong, vibrant marriage does not just HAPPEN; it is BUILT.

By wisdom a house is built, and through understanding it is established; through knowledge its rooms are filled with rare and beautiful treasures.

Proverbs 24:3-4

IT’S FOUNDATIONAL

“Therefore everyone who hears these words of mine and puts them into practice is like a wise man who built his house on the rock. The rain came down, the streams rose, and the winds blew and beat against that house; yet it did not fall, because it had its foundation on the rock. But everyone who hears these words of mine and does not put them into practice is like a foolish man who built his house on sand. The rain came down, the streams rose, and the winds blew and beat against that house, and it fell with a great crash.”

Matthew 7:24-27

Every marriage experiences the STORMS of ADVERSITY.

  • Marriage Myth:

If you marry the RIGHT person, then everything will work out RIGHT.

    • Love should be EASY.
    • Your happiness is most IMPORTANT.
    • Your spouse will COMPLETE you.
  • Marriage Truth:

Marriage will EXPOSE what is already INSIDE of you.

The Compulsion for Completion:

If you try to find intimacy with another person before achieving a sense of wholeness on your own, all your relationships become an attempt to complete yourself.

- Les & Leslie Parrott

Who is meeting your deepest needs?

  • ACCEPTANCE
  • IDENTITY
  • SECURITY
  • PURPOSE

Every marriage is only as STRONG as its FOUNDATION.

  • A wise marriage builds a foundation upon JESUS.

You cannot BUILD a foundation on Jesus without OBEYING the teachings of Jesus.

“Haven’t you read,” he replied, “that at the beginning the Creator ‘made them male and female,’ and said, ‘For this reason a man will leave his father and mother and be united to his wife, and the two will become one flesh’? So they are no longer two, but one flesh. Therefore what God has joined together, let no one separate.”

Matthew 19:4-6

God is the ARCHITECT of marriage.

  • God DESIGNED marriage, and so it works best by His DESIGN.
  • Marriage is built into the fabric of CREATION, not a fabrication of CULTURE.
  • Family is at the HEART of God’s VISION for the world.

What foundation are you building your marriage on?

Cornerstone: the first stone set to construct a masonry foundation. All other stones are set in reference to this stone; thus, it determines the position of the entire structure. Symbolically, it means something of great importance that everything else depends on.
