The Only Not Good in the Garden

More from Unalone

Teaching Notes

Then the LORD God said, “It is not good for the man to be alone. I will make a helper (“Ezer”) who is just right for him.”

Genesis 2:18

Everything God made was good, except for one thing. Even before sin entered the world, God declared it “not good” for humanity to be alone. Yet, people are lonelier and more disconnected than ever before. We, as the church, are called to be in relationship with God and one another; to know and be known, serve and be served, love and be loved.

God, our “Ezer” is always with us. He invites us to partner with His helping work in our lives and other people’s lives by:

  • Being fully present and showing up with our whole selves.

Let us think of ways to motivate one another to acts of love and good works. And let us not neglect our meeting together, as some people do, but encourage one another…

Hebrews 10:24-25

Parker Palmer: “The human soul doesn’t want to be advised or fixed or saved. It simply wants to be witnessed — to be seen, heard, and companioned exactly as it is.”

  • Fighting side-by-side.

Two people are better off than one, for they can help each other succeed. If one person falls, the other can reach out and help. But someone who falls alone is in real trouble.

Ecclesiastes 4:9-10

“As iron sharpens iron, so a friend sharpens a friend.

Proverbs 27:17

  • Providing and meeting needs.

Share each other’s burdens, and in this way obey the law of Christ…. Therefore, whenever we have the opportunity, we should do good to everyone—especially to those in the family of faith.

Galatians 6: 2, 10

Questions to consider:

  • What obstacles get in the way of connecting with others, especially at church?
  • What can you do to move from isolation to investing in a couple of friendships?
  • How has Jesus been your Ezer through His presence and provisions this month?
  • Pick one of the three ways you want to show up for someone this week and do it!
